Joel Kujala is a Senior Associate based in Helsinki specializing in dispute resolution, including arbitration, litigation, mediation and dispute board proceedings. He has significant experience in arbitration, including international arbitration under major institutional rules such as the ICC, SCC, and FAI, with cases seated both within the Nordics and in key international hubs such as Geneva and Singapore.
Joel’s expertise spans capital infrastructure and project disputes, as well as a range of other contentious matters such as post-M&A, shareholder agreements, cartel damages, ICT, finance, guarantee and tax-related disputes under a variety of applicable laws, including Finnish, Swedish, English, Swiss and Chinese law.
Joel also has experience of white-collar matters, and he assists companies and management in pre-trial investigations and before courts.
Work highlights
Joel Kujala’s experience includes advising:
- Finnish nuclear company Fennovoima in six parallel ICC arbitrations against Rosatom group companies arising as a result of the termination of an EPC Contract for the turnkey delivery of the Hanhikivi-1 nuclear power plant, with claims valued at several billion euros;
- Claimant in multiple concurrent FAI arbitrations concerning cartel damages claims valued at USD 800 million;
- Claimant in a post-M&A dispute concerning a share pledge involving claims in excess of SEK 600 million;
- Multiple clients in various types of interim measures proceedings before Finnish courts, including interim relief concerning calls of first demand guarantees;
- Companies in prosecuting and enforcing their claims in connection with white-collar crime;
- Company management and individuals in white-collar proceedings, including in responding to allegations of tax, bookkeeping and environmental offences.
