Roschier partners with OX2 in a Baltic Sea biodiversity initiative
Insights|September 10, 2025
Roschier has become an official partner to Project Björkskär, a biodiversity initiative by OX2 and its partners UnderYtan and Nemo Seafarms located in Åland, Finland.
The project aims to find ways to combine renewable energy, biodiversity, and aquaculture. In the initiative, event-based research is conducted to investigate how offshore wind turbine foundations can be designed to restore the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Earlier phases at Björkskär have tested different materials and structures with the goal of increasing biodiversity in an area with low ecological variety. The work is carried out as event-based research, with measures planned, implemented and continuously monitored in the field. The insights from this work are now being scaled up in the LifePin phase.
Through participation in the next phase of tests, called “LifePin”, Roschier will gain valuable insights based on test results, to better support project development in marine habitats. The knowledge exchange will cover subjects such as the EU’s non-price criteria, biodiversity credits as well as the practice on restoration and conservation of habitats. LifePin is a cylindrical test structure extending ten meters below the surface, with plates and materials attached at various depths. The purpose is to study how species such as blue mussels and bladderwrack establish themselves, and how depth influences the creation of new habitats on offshore foundations.
Partner Matias Wallgren, Head of Roschier’s Environment & Natural Resources practice, states, “We are delighted to join Project Björkskär and support OX2 and its partners to find new solutions for biodiversity in the Baltic Sea. At Roschier, we believe that strong partnerships and knowledge sharing are essential for solving complex environmental challenges. We are proud to contribute to this important work and help shape the future of biodiversity restoration in the Baltic Sea region.”
