Mentorship as a cornerstone of legal career development
Insights|February 24, 2025
As a part of our pro bono efforts, Roschier endorses mentoring programs and facilitates valuable networking events to support young professionals in developing their careers.
Mentoring is essential for professional growth, and the legal field is no exception. Through initiatives like the Finnish Bar Association’s mentoring program, experienced professionals can guide the next generation of lawyers. More than just offering advice, mentoring builds relationships that foster both personal and professional development.
At Roschier, mentoring is a key part of our pro bono efforts and reflects our strong culture of support. We encourage everyone, at all levels, to contribute to the development of younger colleagues. We also host various events throughout the year for both alumni and students, offering a platform for learning and sharing knowledge across all positions. Mentoring at Roschier is not just about senior professionals guiding juniors – it’s also valuable among peers, encouraging mutual growth and insight.
Roschier’s mentoring programs, such as Oikismentorointi (Law Mentorship), which supports students aiming to enter law school, highlight our commitment to nurturing talent from an early stage. We believe mentoring is one of the best ways to ensure students are better prepared for law school applications. The program pairs aspiring law students with legal professionals, offering guidance on the application process, law studies, student life, and career options. The aim of the program is to ensure that no one faces limited opportunities to enter law school due to lack of information, family background, or socioeconomic status.
During the program, each participant is matched with a personal mentor, a legal professional who volunteers their time. The meetings cover a range of topics, from preparing for entrance exams to balancing work and studies, and the program provides a unique opportunity to connect with others who share the same goals. The flexibility of remote meetings allows participants to engage from anywhere, making it accessible to all.
Senior Associate Sara Väyrynen, who has mentored law students for the past few years, emphasizes the mutual benefits of mentoring. For mentees, it provides guidance and builds confidence. For mentors, it offers the chance to witness growth and gain fresh insights.
“I’ve had the opportunity to witness my mentees’ professional development and confidence grow. The most fulfilling aspect has been knowing my advice has helped them overcome challenges. Our discussions have also given me new perspectives and helped me develop my own skills,” Sara says.
Mentoring is a powerful way to strengthen the legal profession and ensure the next generation is well-prepared to succeed.
