A man of many talents, the one and only Ameer Ali Mohsin

He likes to portray himself as a hard-hearted person – but confides that he is entirely the opposite. It was his kindness, work ethic, and dry sense of humor that recently secured him a secret nomination by his colleagues in the Conference & Office team for 2024 Talent of the Year. Unsurprisingly, he won.

“It was a lovely and compassionate gesture from my boss, Tua, and the team to nominate me. Yet when my name was announced at the Finnish Bar Association event, I was stunned. I don’t remember what I said in my acceptance speech or what I did. It was all a blur!” says Ameer Ali Mohsin.

Man of many talents

When Ameer joined Roschier as an intern in 2016, he had never imagined working at a Finnish law firm. “I’d studied English Literature at Baghdad University and had ten years working various jobs, but my first day was intimidating. Everyone looked sharp, smart, and scary in their suits, and I was the only one dressed for a soccer match.”

He started as a trainee in a diploma program, working with the brand protection team before eventually being hired full-time. “For some unknown reason, possibly thanks to my charm and beauty,” laughs Ameer, “Roschier fell in love and wanted to keep me.”

“If I could go back and give myself some advice, I’d say, ‘Be the real you instead of trying to fit in. Everyone will like you even though you’re nervous about wearing sneakers, sweatpants, and a t-shirt.”

Today, Premises and Office Services is his specialty. “I deal with everything from maintenance, office supplies, and security to safety and help desk office support. Thanks to my Arabic skills, I am able to provide language support to our lawyers. It’s cliché, but I take pleasure in everything I do, whether it’s tightening a screw or applying super glue.”

Pride and compassion

One of Ameer’s most enjoyable roles is guiding new trainees when they arrive. “We have 14 trainees for the fall and spring and six for the summer, and I always feel responsible for them. I’m involved in the recruitment process with HR, so when we interview them, I always say we have people here who are helpful and willing to support you.”

Ameer recollects the help he received: “I would often forget to have lunch or breaks. So, one senior associate would regularly invite me to sit with her to chat, which forced me to take a break. It took me years to realize that she was taking care of me. Today, I have the same compassion for the trainees under my care.”

He shares a recent memory of the trainees organizing a May Day event for the office and giving a speech. “I was recording them, smiling without even realizing it. Someone took a picture of me and captioned it, “Ameer’s the proud dad,” and I really was.”

Professional growth

Looking back over his time with Roschier, Ameer acknowledges the numerous opportunities provided to develop and grow professionally and personally. And he wants even more responsibilities. “My role has changed almost every year; it started small and is getting bigger.”

When asked whether he’s faced any challenges, he immediately answers, ‘Covid.’ “I was one of the few people at the office almost every day. Because I’m motivated by face-to-face interactions and socializing, the job was mentally tough during that period. Learning the Finnish language hasn’t been easy, either.”

For Ameer, it has been quite a journey, but he has learned a great deal about himself since that nerve-wracking first day at the office. “If I could go back and give myself some advice, I’d say, ‘Be the real you instead of trying to fit in. Everyone will like you even though you’re nervous about wearing sneakers, sweatpants, and a t-shirt.”
