"If I had to describe the sort of person who does well and enjoys working at Roschier, I'd say that they are talented and passionate individuals."
- What most surprises new recruits? I think it's how much we work in teams across competences. ICT expert Mikko Manner, the partner in charge of Roschier's recruitment activities for the Helsinki office, has a long history in tutoring junior lawyers. So he's had plenty of experience selecting younger colleagues and helping them develop.
- Newly graduated lawyers often expect that they'll be working alone on purely legal issues. Thus, another big surprise is that we are contributing to the clients' business operations, he says.
For some people, becoming a trusted advisor can require a change of attitude.
- It's not like in the movies. People don't hang onto your words of wisdom. Being a lawyer is all about customer service, and that requires a degree of humility and a lot of flexibility.
Manner explains that this means not just providing great legal advice, but doing so at a time and in a way fitting the client. It means putting the client's needs first.
Fortunately, Roschier offers the structure and support to help its lawyers develop and overcome any hurdles.

During the first four years of their careers, associates have the opportunity to spend time gaining experience of different industries and practice areas before they specialize. By then they should be ready to take the Bar exam and become members of the Bar. They then develop as senior associates and eventually some of them go on to become partners.
Throughout the process, the "Roschier University" supports people's personal and professional development.
- We tailor career plans for each lawyer, which are reviewed regularly. Competence development programs help our associates become better lawyers, and the kind of professionals who can become partners, notes Rainer Hilli, managing partner of the firm.
That's not to say that only a certain "type" of person will fit in. Hilli explains that Roschier's practice is highly international, and people get the chance to work with lawyers and clients from many different cultures. And so Roschier, too, needs varied cultures, skills and personalities represented within the firm.
What unites them, though, is the spirit of "one firm".
- If I had to describe the sort of person who does well and enjoys working at Roschier, I'd say that they are talented and passionate individuals, Hilli sums up.
